I've been reading some interesting books over the Christmas period. The last time I was at CAT back in October, I listened to an interesting talk by Professor David Mackay, scientific advisor to the Government so I thought his book would be worth a look http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_2_12?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=david+mackay%27s+sustainable+energy+without+the+hot+air&sprefix=david+mackay
It can be read on line at www.withoutthehotair.com
He tries to put numbers to our emissions/energy crisis and while everyone will take issue with some of his figures, it is never the less interesting to see how it might all stack up. I like figures - getting rather fed up with words!
I've also read Permaculture in a Nutshell (Patrick Whitefield) which leaves me with rather more questions than answers but presumably that is what it is designed to do! I'd recommend it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_2_12?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=permaculture+in+a+nutshell&sprefix=permaculture
The other one was an interesting book about growing veg in winter - The Winter harvest handbook by Eliot Coleman. I haven't finished that one yet but its interesting so far. http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_5_5?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=eliot+coleman&sprefix=eliot
I'm busy planning my Nuffield travels at the moment. I fly to San Francisco in 9 days!!! I hope to blog more often while I'm away. It will be a great way to record all the wonderful natural buildings and interesting people I am going to see along the way. Sally (www.wickedpoppy.co.uk) is preparing my poster for this conference just north of the Golden Gate Bridge 27-30 Jan www.ecobuildnetwork.org
I read Permaculture in a Nutshell last year and really enjoyed it, as you say it is all basic stuff but a very good starting point and not to scray a size either
